About Us

How we got started

InRoads was established in 2005 by Joe Smart and Greg Dunkley. Both Greg and Joe received their training in marriage and family therapy, which encourages a more systemic approach to helping people.

Through its growth, InRoads has been able to serve many satisfied people and their families through a high degree of personal care. Generally, each client is pre-assessed by Joe and/or Greg, who oversees the client’s personalized supervision after starting the program.

Our beliefs

1. We believe all individuals have the capacity to improve their lives no matter their situation.

2. We believe solutions are best found through collaboration with people and providers involved in their lives.

3. We believe every person is unique, therefore their road to recovery will require individualized treatment in reaching their personal goals.

4. We believe people should be truly welcomed, valued, and respected for who they are — regardless of differences. Therefore, we value respect, inclusivity, and cultural competence.

5. We believe all people have the right to direct the course of their treatment and the right to choose their preferred provider.

What we do

InRoads specializes in providing in-home mental health services for children, adolescents, and adults. This means we come to you. We literally meet you where you’re at.

In following the InRoads mission, our agency has grown and expanded the services we offer as the needs of those we serve have changed. At InRoads, we have been influenced by the amazing staff that has been drawn to the agency. An integral part of the services we offer has been helping members of the refugee population. This opportunity has allowed us to expand our worldview, have greater respect for various cultures, and enriched the lives of our providers.

Meet our staff

Joe and Greg have a long history together. While they graduated from the same master’s program, their friendship began in high school. Back then, they had no big plans to start an agency together, but their close friendship informs how they administer InRoads. They saw a need in their childhood community for quality, caring, and helpful mental health services. As marriage and family therapists, Joe and Greg have rooted InRoads in the idea that helping a person is best done through assisting the individual to increase their positive interactions and connection to their natural supports, such as friends, family, and community.

Joe Smart, LMFT (he/him)

Program director

Joe Smart’s first opportunity to help people struggling with mental health was working with teens and their families at a wilderness therapy program. This experience inspired him to change the direction of his education toward helping individuals and families find a greater degree of peace, eventually completing a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy at Utah State University and becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Joe is LGBTQIA+ competent and supportive. Joe’s work at InRoads involves ensuring the staff is well-trained and prepared. He has developed our philosophical approaches, models of care, and curriculum for the different services InRoads offers. His approach to helping people is informed by his belief that you must meet a person or family where they are and then chart a route with them to recovery through better interactions with those in their life.
